Implanting Chips in Humans
From Grauniad of the UK
George Orwell would be
pleased
In a tiny cubicle, Joe
Bloggs is on the toilet seat when a voice can be heard on the tannoy,
reverberating across the whole floor: "Joe, you've been away from your
desk for over 4 mins. Toilet breaks are 2 mins maximum for No.1 and 4 mins
maximum for No.2. Repeat: You have exceeded your No.2 Toilet Break Credit!
Please return to your desk immediately. Repeat: Immediately! If Toilet Break
Extra Time is needed, please advise HR and explain why. This is a message for
Joe Bloggs from Central Control. Repeat: This is a message for..."

Social media is anti-social
No real surprises here:
the more time you spend on line, checking on virtual friends (who may be real
friends or not), the less time you have to go out and meet people, since there are
only 24 hrs in the day (and night). With some young people, it reaches bizarre
levels, as we know.

An interesting new
experimental study from the University of Pennsylvania has demonstrated the
first causal connection between social media use and feelings of depression
and loneliness.

Sex & the Self-Driving Car
GIZMAG
Making the most of one's
commute: you ain't seen nothing yet!
"Is that the
ice-cream van, mate?"
"No, it's Tatyana,
the Bielorussian girl, in her self-driving stretched limo, on her evening
round."
"What services does
she offer?"
"She calls it Uber
Personalized Escort & Assist Services Ltd: a true businesswoman, she is,
Tatyana."
"Business, what
business?"
"£60.00 for a quick
one in the back of the vehicle, mate. A real upmarket brothel on wheels, red
curtains, thick carpet, king-size bed: 15 mins. Amazing. And you get a free
glass of Prosecco. And nibbles."
"Nibbles?"
"Well, peanuts --
and she may nibble your nuts if you pay extra."
"Right. I'm off!
See you shortly..."
"You flag her by
the side of the road, waving your £50 note."
"Thanks!"

AI Art
GIZMAG -- Was it bought by a humanoid robot with a taste for representative art?
It is an ugly daub, but a daub made by artificial intelligence (AI) -- not to be confused with artificial stupidity (AS), when the robot has learning difficulties, and natural stupidity, when it is not a robot at all. Apparently, non-artificial intelligence also exists.

Last week, the first ever work of AI-generated art to be sold by a major auction house fetched US$432,500. The work, entitled Portrait of Edmond Belamy, is a depiction of a fictional character and ...

Felik AI
GIZMAG -- Because fat
cats are a problem
"It is a fantastic
invention," commented Miss Ramonella Bumpkins of Plymouth (England).
"My boyfriend, Jason Potter, tends to spend most of the weekend
watching TV from the comfort of the sitting-room's sofa, a can of beer in hand.
(Not the same can of beer for more than 25 mins on average.) With Felik, it
will tease him and, when he gets up to go to the kitchen (or the loo,
inevitably), Felik will interact with him and encourage Jason to move about a
bit. Jason might lose weight as a result. It's a win-win situation. If Felik
can talk, I might be able to have a conversation with it too..."

Designed by Seattle-based
startup Angry Lychee, the Wi-Fi-connected Felik is intended to be mounted on
a wall or placed on a shelf, and is equipped with an infrared camera that it
uses to detect ...

Sexist AI
That's an interesting one: Artificial Intelligence (AI) relies on previous data that has been collected, and it extrapolates patterns on that basis, which become criteria for making recommendations or decisions.
If the original data is biased or partial, inevitably, it affects the 'picture' of reality that AI builds up, and you end up having absurd 'decisions'.
It shows the limitations of AI, as it is. There's no 'intelligence' to it in the human sense: it is merely regurgitating pieces of data on the basis of more data that's been input over time, scanning masses of data for 'clues' as to what is 'good' or not.
In this case, the word 'woman' or 'women' got the CVs rejected!

Lumi
A high-technology brush to die for. How did we manage before the launch of the Lumi brush?
The next generation will be internet-enabled and will send a full report to your smartphone and tablet computer every time it is put to good use, analyzing all the relevant data and forwarding it to your GP. This way, you will also be able to keep an eye on the bowel movements of your wife, and/or children, and/or nanny.

Real Science-fiction
GIZMAG
Science fiction is here and now, and for real.
"I am the biggest drone you can get, and I can recharge in mid-air too," tweeted POTUS, pleased with himself. "A double-cheeseburger with a large portion of fries and a Coke on Air Force One is enough to keep Donald Trump going for a couple of hours. I am Drone #1, the best, the biggest, the most biggest-largest drone you have ever seen!"

In-flight charging gives drones unlimited autonomous range
Russian company GET (Global Energy Transmission) has pioneered a mid-air inductive recharging system that can charge up several drones at once without requiring them to land. Build enough of these stations, and you can have an army of drones in the air that never need to land.

Deepfake
Next-gen deepfakes can falsely put words in people's mouths:
https://newatlas.com/recycle-gan-deepfake/56280/?
Deepfake. It's a word that's entered the modern lexicon for all the wrong reasons. The technique can superimpose the likeness of one person onto a video of someone else. Now, new research could take deepfakes to the next level, taking the detailed content of one video and applying it to another.
