#1 Hot for TeacherSalamanca City (N.Y.) Central School District approved bringing in a new teacher for $60,000. The approval was controversial, not because it was an unreasonable salary, but because it was a purchase: “Sally” is an A.I.-powered robot.
“Having a difficult time programming an Arduino board? Don’t even know what an Arduino board is? Ask Sally and she can explain it,” gushed Superintendent Mark Beehler.
The community wasn’t so accepting, as unionized teachers and parents were concerned about Sally’s role in the classroom, and about the company who built her: Realbotix’s sister company is Intima — which partially owns RealDoll, which manufacturers a more... intimate version of realistic robots.
“Realbotix LLC and Intima LLC have different product offerings with no crossover,” the company said. The school district assures concerned citizens that the robot works through “enhanced student data privacy agreements,” and that it won’t replace any staff.
